1. Developing understanding of Britain and Britishness_
The new inspection guidance seeks to recognise the key role that Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development and Religious Education (RE) play in ensuring a breadth of education that will offer children a vision and understanding of Britain and the wider world as populated by diverse peoples. Placing mutual respect for the diversity of different faiths at the heart of the curriculum means actively exploring faith and belief in Britain today. Delegates will consider how RE enables pupils to be reflective about their own beliefs, religious or otherwise and to explore their identity and belonging, considering what this means in a national community increasingly defined by multi-faith, multicultural values. Through a mix of direct input and practical application, colleagues will examine creative approaches to ensure that they enhance SMSC through a broad and balanced RE curriculum.
2. Enhancing SMSC development through Collective Worship
This course is aimed at those with responsibilities for SMSC development and collective worship in primary schools. Through a mix of direct input and discussion we will examine the legal framework for collective worship and creative approaches to ensure that collective worship meets the legal requirements, enhances pupils social, moral, spiritual and cultural (SMSC) development and is a valuable and valued part of the school day. The aim of this course is to:
-
- give those responsible a clear understanding of the statutory requirements for collective worship
- explore ways of enhancing pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development
- develop creative stratigies for actively engaging pupils in assemblies and through collective worship
